An empirical study of TCP/IP performance over ATM

چکیده
This paper outlines some basic performance characteristics of the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). It also discusses a few solutions to assure acceptable TCP/IP performance over ATM which are implemented by the industry the during the last couple of years. The conclusions in this paper are based on empirical TCP/IP performance test results collected on a DS3 ATM research testbed, architected with commercially available IP and ATM equipment. TCP/IP performance can vary widely and suffer significantly over ATM networks with large Bandwidth*Delay products. First, it is essential that the TCP window size matches the Bandwidth*Delay product of the end-to-end connection to fully utilize the bandwidth provided by the broadband network. Even if the window size meets this criteria, TCP performance can still be unacceptable, especially if the buffering within the ATM network is limited. A single limitedbuffer bottleneck is sufficient to degrade the performance of a TCP connection when multiple traffic sources congest the bottleneck resource, such as in ATM networks with small buffer switches. One approach to assure acceptable TCP/IP performance is to limit the data rate into the bottleneck resource by exercising rate control at the entry to the ATM network. A better solution is to provide sufficient buffering within the ATM network.

Tcp/ip over Atm - Performance Evaluation and Optimisation
The integration of TCP/IP and ATM is a challenging architectural issue in today’s global networks, where the unique properties of ATM technology can be combined with the TCP/IP mature and well-proven protocol suite. A rigorous characterisation of the performance of TCP/IP over ATM can be a powerful tool for the efficient use of both technologies. TCP error and flow control mechanisms were desig...
متن کاملCharacterization of performance of TCP/IP over PPP and ATM over asymmetric links
The objective of this paper is to characterize and analyze the performance of TCP/IP when used over point-to-point protocol (PPP) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) over asymmetric links. This will allow us to gain insight into this new protocol architecture used in the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) access network and investigate the related quality of service (QoS) issues. Using ...
متن کاملPerformance of TCP/IP over ATM over an ADSL
The performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) was investigated. Because the bandwidth of an ADSL link can vary over time due to changes in the link’s physical conditions, which degrades TCP performance, we performed simulations for various ATM traffic controls, including available bit rate (ABR) and generic flow control, used to handle variations in the AD...
